Kittie's Christmas 1892

Depending or your point of view; I'm either too late,
or too early, to be posting a Christmas image!
But since I collect Christmas ephemera
year round, I couldn't help but
post this unusual item that I
recently acquired.

The little girl offers a dead mouse and goldfish
to the mother cat. Hanging from
the tree branches are two more dead mice
and fish..presumably for the
two little kittens!

Hi Rick...questa immagine natalizia è decisamente meravigliosa...adoro le vecchie cartoline vittoriane!! Un caro saluto, *Maristella*.

Thank you for this unusual XMAS image. I collect XMAS all year, too. And Thank You for the nice enlargement that appears when you click on the image...a chance to see those extra mice and goldfish on the tree. I know someone who will love the idea that the little girl is "gifting" dead mice and fish to her cats. Or, maybe they are marzipan mice and dresden goldfish ornaments. Thanks for the treat!

P.S. I found your blog only recently, and loved the McLoughlin furniture sheets you posted in August 2010. Is there any chance you'd ever post them again with similar enlargements when we click? I've tried printing them from your earlier post, but they aren't very clear. I'd love to make a few pieces of the furniture myself to put in a reproduction Bliss house I made.

Thanks Maristella!

Thanks Sharon! The goldfish do look like Dresden ornaments don't they?
Unfortunately, I no longer have that McLoughlin furniture, so I'm unable to get a larger scan of it.

I am amazed at this image! Have you ever seen anthing else like it? Was it fashionable? Is it humor, social comment?

What an amazing expression for yuletide! CM

Well, I believe that this was a page from a storybook, probably illustrating some strange children's story..it's about 8" X 10" and is glued to a scrapbook page.
I've seen other weird late 19th century Christmas images including possums, rats and dead birds!
